Turn your work into support!

You do not need to stop doing what you do to help queer people in Russia and across the region — quite the opposite — please keep doing it.

Cut hair, give career advice, walk dogs, teach yoga, take portraits, tattoo people, bake cakes, help someone with their taxes, or run a workshop. Whatever it is that people already come to you for — choose one session and invite your client to donate to ComingOut instead of paying you. It can be a one-off, a monthly habit, or something you do whenever the timing feels right.

ComingOut | Turn your work into support

How it can work

Choose the version that feels right for you and people coming to you:

  • Give one service for a donation. Offer an appointment, a class, a walk, or a session free of charge, and ask the person receiving it to donate to Coming Out instead.
  • Donate part of what you earn. Pick one day or service, choose a percentage of your income, and send that amount to Coming Out afterwards.
  • Ask people to add a little extra. Keep your usual price, but invite clients to add a voluntary donation on top.
  • Make it a small event. Run a donation-based class, flash day, group walk, workshop, supper club, or whatever makes sense for your work.

The cleanest version is usually to share our donation link or a QR code directly with the person donating. That way, they know exactly where their support goes, and you do not have to collect or handle anyone’s money yourself.

A few things that will help

— Be clear upfront about what you are offering and how people can donate.

— Use your own words. People support things because the person they trust cares about them.

— Don’t ask too much of yourself; one appointment or one afternoon is already a great contribution to our work.

Not a professional? Still counts.

You absolutely do not need a polished offering to do this.

Our executive director, for example, loves helping friends move houses — carrying boxes, borrowing a van, the whole “let’s get your life into a new flat” situation. Next time they do it, they could ask their friends to donate to Coming Out instead of paying back with dinner or petrol money.

Maybe you are the friend who fixes laptops, makes playlists, takes good photos, cooks for everyone, knows how to assemble IKEA furniture, or always helps people move, or maybe you just want to invite your friends to give because you care — that works too.

The point is, every donation can help change a queer person’s life for the better.

Tell us what you are planning

Got an idea? We would genuinely love to hear it.

Write to us at [email protected] and tell us what you have in mind. We can help you think it through, share a poster or a QR code, help find a few words about our work, and make sure you are not doing all of this alone.

If you would like to share it publicly, tag us on social media, too. You can find all of our accounts in the footer below.

A small safety note

If you plan to travel to Russia or Belarus, please think about your safety before publicly linking yourself to ComingOut. You do not need to use your full name, show your face, or tag us publicly to take part. If you don’t know of a discreet way to do this, just email us, and we will find one together.
