MASHA RAISEs MONEY for LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY IN RUSSIA for her birthday
17th of May 2025 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). It is also my birthday!
This year I am again partnering with Coming Out, an organisation dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones to navigate an increasingly challenging political and social climate in Russia. Coming Out offers free psychological and career counselling for LGBTQ+ people, as well as group support meetings, webinars, and legal advice. They also raise awareness by collecting real statistics on the status of queer people’s lives in Russia and providing them to journalists and international human rights protection organisations.
Over the past two years, we’ve supported the queer community in Russia through:

Challenges for the community
legal and political pressure
Increased enforcement of laws against so-called LGBT propaganda and other political cases places LGBTQ+ individuals at constant risk of legal action, severely restricting freedom of expression and advocacy.
Families
Queer children in Russia lack support, with laws preventing discussions about LGBTQ+ topics by adults, heightening their isolation. Supportive parents navigate these restrictive laws amid risks of backlash and potential legal consequences. Non-heteronormative parents face discrimination and threats of child removal.
TRANSGENDER RIGHTS ROLLBACK
Recent laws have abruptly restricted transgender rights, complicating the already bureaucratic process of legal and medical transitions. Historically, transition was easier from a legal standpoint in Russia than in many other countries regarded as more progressive, but these new restrictions have drastically reversed those freedoms, leaving many transgender individuals in limbo and uncertain about their future.

Despite restrictions, the organisation continues to offer legal advice webinars to mitigate risks associated with the new laws that target LGBTQ+ people.
HELPING TRANS*PEOPLE
